At the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, every role helps children and young people live their healthiest lives.
As the largest paediatric health service in Australia, we care for thousands of children each year, in hospital and at home. Our people are united by compassion, collaboration and excellence in care.
What you'll be doing
We are seeking an experienced research manager to join our group CHipLab (CHildren’s Perioperative LABoratory) within the Department of Anaesthesia at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. They will be broadly responsible for supporting our research capacity and expanding it over the next 3-5 years.
Our department is part of the Sydney Children’s Hospital’s Network, the largest paediatric hospitals organization in Australia. We care for children of all ages throughout the whole of their perioperative experience from the day plans are made until they return home. That includes providing elective and emergency anaesthesia for all forms of surgery, pre- and post-operative support, acute pain management and resuscitation for severely ill children.
Our research programme includes clinical trials, basic science research and qualitative research projects across a wide range of areas. Collaborations within the hospital, across Sydney, within Australia and internationally are all active and encouraged. Areas of focus include the neurodevelopmental impact of anaesthesia on children, utilizing physiological data to effectively improve acute paediatric care, the roles of virtual reality in supporting children during procedures and inspiring new ways of driving care, the physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass in children with a focus on nitric oxide biology, and the optical monitoring of brain oxygenation during cardiac surgery in infants and children, amongst others. As a group, our research interest is driven by finding new ways to make a difference to children. We are not limited by what we do now. We are inspired by the potential offered by tomorrow.
The research manager will manage the day-to-day operation of the research group, prepare and submit grant submissions, supervise research assistants, support and conduct clinical trials in paediatric anaesthesia, and assist with supervision or co-supervision of undergraduate and post-graduate students, anaesthetic registrars and fellows. The successful applicant will be encouraged and supported to pursue their own research interests where practical and relevant.
The preferred applicant will be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title in the Faculty of Medicine and Health of The University of Sydney at a level commensurate with their qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for research and clinical matters.
