What you'll be doing
Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) is a world leading centre for paediatric organ transplantation with over 500 livers, 300 kidneys, and more recently islets and hearts transplanted.

In addition to these clinical activities, SCHN is leading globally significant research programs in organ transplantation and gene therapy, many collaboratively with other local health districts (LHDs), universities and medical research institutes (MRIs).

The Children's Centre for Transplantation and Research (CCTR) aims to create a world class multi-disciplinary space that is not only transformational for children requiring organ transplantation, but also for those with conditions amenable to gene therapy.

The Research Fellow is a newly created position within the CCTR at the SCHN, to undertake research activities and projects focussing on perfusion capabilities for a variety of organs and tissues. The role will perform advanced work in the selection, preparation, operation and maintenance of extracorporeal circulatory equipment.

Primary responsibilities of the role are to:
  1. Lead the research in advanced perfusion capabilities of organs and tissues received as part of the CCTR program.
  2. Ensure effective perfusion of organs.
  3. Test and refine perfusion techniques, equipment and protocol.
  4. Input to continued development of the CCTR laboratory as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  5. Assist and develop gene and cell therapies associated with improving organ survival.
  1. Extensive experience in research output, published work, presentations at conferences and seminars, demonstrating intellectual input into the conception and direction of original research and increasing independent implementation of a research project.
  2. Medical or medical science training background with sound experience in the laboratory or clinical setting.
  3. Ability to liaise effectively and demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and ability to congenially interact with colleagues, patients and relatives from all walks of life.
  4. Internal English Proficiency Testing System (IELTS) proficiency exam (academic module) with a minimum result of 6.5 in each category and completed within the past 2 years, if applicable.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to further education and professional development.
  6. Ability and willingness to participate in the on-call roster and overtime arrangements (when directed and where necessary).
