About the role:
What you'll be doing
The Editorial Manager is part of the NCIRS Communications Team and is also responsible for the management of content across NCIRS websites, including creating new content, editing and proofreading content, updating existing content and publishing content, including contributing to website improvements and liaising with external stakeholders to troubleshoot websites issues. This position is responsible for collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure complex technical content is translated into engaging and accessible content to reach target audiences.
The Editorial Manager will work closely with all NCIRS program areas to ensure NCIRS outputs, including resources, reports and documentation, are edited and at the highest standard.
- Provide and manage high-quality editorial support for all NCIRS content including resources, reports and communications outputs.
- Manage NCIRS website content and ensure it is up to date and accurate.
- Lead the development and implementation of our editorial strategy.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth editorial processes, website operations and content delivery.
- Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Journalism, English, Publishing or a related field
- Experience: Professional editorial experience in structural editing, copyediting and proofreading. Experience managing editorial teams is a plus
- Skills: Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat and reference management software (e.g., EndNote)
- Knowledge: Familiarity with the Commonwealth Style Manual and experience using style

About NCIRS
The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) is the leading organisation in Australia in immunisation and vaccines that provides expert advice to support evidence-informed immunisation policy and guideline development, evaluation of immunisation programs, particularly the National Immunisation Program, and the monitoring of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine coverage and factors impacting uptake, and vaccine safety. NCIRS has national and international recognition in this arena and has a growing program of international work, focused on providing technical support for immunisation system strengthening to countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID) at the University of Sydney. NCIRS is funded primarily by the Australian Government and NSW Government, as well as via grants from WHO, Gavi, and research granting bodies.
Please note that throughout the recruitment process you will be assessed with the following:
- Tertiary qualification in Journalism, English or Publishing, or related field with experience in health, academic or research desirable.
- Demonstrated professional editorial experience (e.g. structural editing, copy editing and proofreading) in working on a range of different outputs and communication channels and meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience managing editorial/publishing teams and contractors.
- Experience working with research, educational or academic content written by subject matter experts with proven ability to work closely with researchers and academics to refine and publish content.
- Knowledge of Commonwealth Style Manual and experience in using style guides.
- Ability to set priorities and monitor workflows and systems with the area of responsibility, including excellent organisational skills in planning, project management and delivery of high-quality outputs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat and reference management software (e.g. EndNote)
As part of your application please address the following targeted questions:
- Describe your experience providing high-quality editorial support for formal outputs, including technical, academic or health-related content. As part of the description, please outline the tools (including style guides) you use to ensure consistency and clarity. Please also describe how you work with subject matter experts to translate complex information into accessible content and adapt your editorial or writing style for different audiences, including the strategies you use to ensure the content is clear, engaging and accessible.
- Explain your understanding of best-practice editorial and publishing workflows, from planning and drafting through to editing, author review and publication. What do you consider the most critical elements of an effective publishing process, and what common pitfalls can hinder it? Who are the key contributors, and when should they be involved? Additionally, describe how you have contributed to the development or implementation of editorial strategies, content standards or digital content improvements.
- Tell us about a time when you managed multiple competing editorial priorities. How did you coordinate tasks across internal teams, external contractors and your own contributions to meet deadlines and maintain quality, especially when priorities changed or stakeholders had limited visibility of the broader workload? Please also describe a time when something went wrong during the editorial process, such as referencing inconsistencies or version control issues, and explain how you resolved it.
