About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology is currently seeking a skilled Post Mortem Assistant to join the Anatomical Pathology Department at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Operating in a busy and dynamic environment, the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory at John Hunter Hospital conducts tests for surgical patients across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley region.

What you'll be doing
 

The postmortem assistant coordinates and liaises with Anatomical Pathologists, donor coordinator, post-mortem coordinators, social workers and funeral directors to provide an appropriate and respectful service for the deceased.

  1. Demonstrated experience performing post mortems and any associated duties in a mortuary.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental anatomy and physiology, and a basic understanding of medical terminology.
  3. Proven ability to work with the deceased in an environment that could be distressing, ensuring to raise any associated concerns and/or need for support, and adopt self-care strategies.
  4. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner in a team environment, and to effectively communicate with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  5. Display initiative and attention to detail in all aspects of clinical and clerical work practices.
  6. Commitment to the principles of continuous quality improvement activities, Work Health & Safety, and infection control guidelines.
  7. Willingness to work shift work and participate in an on-call roster, and travel in accordance with the demands of the role holding a current NSW driver's license.
  8. Demonstrated capacity to adopt and model the NSWHP RITE values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence.
