About the opportunity
NSW Health Pathology are currently seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant to join the Histology sector of our Anatomical Pathology Laboratory at Liverpool Hospital.
This laboratory provides a full area service Anatomical Pathology service to several hospitals within the South West Sydney Local Health District including Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals. The successful applicant will be required to work within a rotating roster with other staff to cover the Medical Laboratory Assistant duties during the hours of operation of the laboratory.

What you'll be doing
This position will be responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including participation in ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.
You will be asked to perform a range of laboratory duties by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Duties include Histology specimen accessioning, troubleshooting and processing, assisting medical/technical/scientific staff with direct, non-complex and complex surgical cut up, training of new staff, and associated quality control exercises. Other laboratory duties including preparation of materials/chemicals, loading tissue processors, stores, filing, maintenance of equipment and specimen/consumables collection/delivery.

- Demonstrated experience in Histology specimen accessioning, troubleshooting and processing, assisting medical/technical/scientific staff with direct, non-complex and complex surgical cut up, training of new staff, and associated quality control exercises.
- Demonstrated experience in other laboratory duties including preparation of materials/chemicals, loading tissue processors, stores, filing, maintenance of equipment and specimen/consumables collection/delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to manage tasks in a demanding environment where there are competing priorities and time constraints, both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, internal and external.
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues.
- Proficient computer and data entry skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive information in a laboratory setting, following relevant legislation, policies, and requirements.
- Willingness to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster, including weekends, public holidays, and night shifts, and the ability to travel to any site or location within the operational area as required.
