This position is advertised internal to NSW Ambulance only. All employees of NSW Ambulance are eligible to apply – contractors and casual employees included. Employees subject to ECP/ICP, SOT or Rescue consolidation periods are ineligible to apply for this position.

Applications are invited from staff who have completed the requirements for NSW Ambulance call-taking and are fully trained and qualified in call-taking, as at the applications closing date, to apply for Ambulance Control Centre Officer (Non Paramedic & Paramedic) full-time positions on a state-wide basis. 

About the role

 As an Ambulance Control Centre Officer, you will play an integral part in the prompt and effective deployment of Ambulance resources in response to emergency calls and non-emergency transports within a defined geographic area through the Computer Aided Dispatch System. You will be receiving and accurately recording and progressing telephone calls relating to the business of NSW Ambulance, and requests for the provision of ambulance services.

This role will require dispatching the most appropriate and timely ambulance resource to all incidents within New South Wales and will interact with other emergency services where incident management requires the cooperation and coordination of specialised resources. You will also be required to continually monitor all pending and active incidents, as well as Ambulance resources and fluid deploy from areas of low demand to high demand as required.


Key knowledge and experience

  • Computer literacy with demonstrated experience in the use of windows-based computer applications and the ability to transfer voice activated information into computerised data entry system.
  • The ability to work independently and as a team member within a critical environment.
  • Excellent communication skills both written & oral.
  • Ability to maintain logical thought processes and remain calm in stressful situations and challenging circumstances.
  • Organisational skills and the ability to manage fluctuating workloads with frequently changing priorities.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and analyse complex issues with proven conceptual thinking skills for effective problem solving and decision making.
  • Possess a current First Aid Certificate and re-certify every three years to maintain currency for non-uniformed employees.

Employment conditions

  • The successful applicant will be appointed under the terms and conditions of the Paramedic and Control Centre Officers (State) Award and will be required to enter into the annual Performance Development Program.
  • The successful applicant may be required to undertake duties at the other centres should the need arise.
  • No Ambulance accommodation is provided.
  • No entitlements to Transferred Employees Benefits (TEB) is provided.
  • Completion of NSW Health Mandatory Training courses is a mandatory requirement for all NSW Health and NSW Ambulance employees applying for this position.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a satisfactory conduct and services check including referee/supervisor check, a review of National Police Check and review of the Service Check Register. A review of excess annual and sick leave, PDP status, ability to undertake full duties of the position and clearances from Professional Conduct & Integrity Unit, Ambulance Education Centre and Infection Control.
  • Employees currently undertaking an ECP or ICP consolidation period are ineligible to apply.
  • Employees currently undertaking a SOT consolidation period are not eligible to apply for positions other than SOT positions. This includes positions offered via merit selection, transfer lists or later transfer mechanism, expressions of interest or secondments.
  • Commitment to perform rotational shift work including weekends and public holidays to cover twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week with early AM and late PM commencement times may be a requirement in the position.
  • Successful completion of all training provided, and the ongoing maintenance of skills attained is mandatory to continue in this position.
  • Return of Service – Successful applicants would not be released for other training including ICP/ECP/CCP/SOT/Education/Paramedic Induction, Projects/Secondments/Acting Higher Duties etc. until two (2) years post sign off as a Control Centre Officer.
  • Preceptorship and Staff Development are part of the position requirements as a Control Centre Officer once qualified and completed skills consolidated periods.

  8. Touch Typing skills of thirty (30) words per minute with an accuracy of ninety-eight percent (98%). (Validation of typing speed and accuracy will be necessary prior to employment being confirmed).
