Where you'll be working
The Aboriginal Health Worker will operate across multiple NSLHD facilities, including but not limited to Royal North Shore Hospital, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, Ryde Hospital and Northern Beaches Hospital. Positions are currently available based at both Royal North Shore Hospital and Northern Beaches Hospital.

What you'll be doing
The position contributes to the delivery of flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive health services, providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, community groups, health professionals and partner organisations. The role aims to improve health outcomes and enhance access to health services for Aboriginal people within hospitals and the broader community across the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD).

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker plays a vital role in supporting the care, welfare and overall experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. This includes ensuring a culturally safe, appropriate and respectful patient journey when accessing health services.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker must be multi-skilled to be able to deliver an appropriate service to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, and to act effectively as cultural advisors between the patients and hospital system to ensure a two-way understanding of the need to balance cultural needs and healthcare.

The position will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programs with a focus on linking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to mainstream services.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background are encouraged to apply.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage under section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, with knowledge and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander culture.
  2. Hold or aspires to hold a minimum of Certificate 3 in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and/or equivalent.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health priorities and ability to effectively and sensitively liaise and communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, sound written and oral communication skills and sound negotiation and organisational skills.
