The Nepean Mental Health Centre provides inpatient care for people experiencing acute mental health issues through the short-stay Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC), the Acute Mental Health Unit, Mental Health High Dependency Unit, and Older Persons Mental Health Unit. We support our Patients by linking them to case managers for ongoing treatment and support within an environment appropriate to the person's needs. 

An exciting opportunity exists for a skilled and motivated Triage and Assessment Registered Nurse to join the Mental Health Team at Nepean Hospital.

The Triage and Assessment Registered Nurse plays a critical role in providing timely, safe, and person‑centred mental health assessment and triage for consumers presenting with acute and complex mental health needs. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse will deliver high-quality Nursing care, undertake comprehensive Mental Health assessments, and support clinical decision‑making in a fast‑paced hospital environment.

This role is ideal for Nurses who are passionate about Mental Health care, thrive in dynamic clinical settings, and are committed to recovery‑oriented, trauma‑informed practice.The Triage and Assessment Registered Nurse will work collaboratively with ED, PECC, Access and inpatient staff across all settings triaging consumers ensuring they are assessed and treated in the most suited environment to meet their individualised needs.

What you will bring to the role

  1. Current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) including completion of a new graduate RN program and/ or experience working as a Registered Nurse
  2. Demonstrated experience working with people presenting with an acute mental health problem
  3. Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills with proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team within minimal direct clinical supervision
  4. Proven effective high level written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to exercise independent professional judgement when solving problems
  5. Working knowledge of the NSW Mental Health Act 2007
  6. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with consumers and carers regarding mental healthcare
  7. An understanding of the recovery philosophy and trauma informed care in Mental Health and the ability to implement these within clinical practice
  8. Current Driver's Licence and willingness to use for work purpose travel
