Newcastle and its surrounds, Port Macquarie, and Tamworth offer more than excellent employment opportunities, they provide outstanding places to live. These settings are well-suited to individuals, couples, and families seeking both professional growth and quality of life.
You'll be part of a highly connected network of hospitals that are collaborative, education-focused, and committed to excellence in patient care and trainee development. Our Emergency Departments are growing not only in size, but in scope, providing opportunities beyond clinical service, including:
- Research
- Point-of-care ultrasound
- Trauma care

- Simulation training
We are proud of our strong culture of learning, mentorship, and professionalism. Our mission is to develop trainees into not only outstanding emergency physicians, but also compassionate, well-rounded individuals who feel deeply connected to the communities they serve.
Where you'll be working
You will work across our dynamic Emergency Medicine Network, which includes:

John Hunter Hospital, one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australia, offers a high acuity setting with a focus on trauma and retrieval medicine. If your training pathway requires tertiary experience only, this can be fully supported within the network at John Hunter Hospital.
What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of a Stage 1 Emergency Medicine Trainee is to provide high-quality medical care, under appropriate supervision, to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Trainees are expected to work within the scope of their clinical experience and training, contributing to patient care in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Seeking senior support and input when required is a core part of safe, effective practice.
This position contributes to and supports progression through Stage 1 of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Training Program. Our Emergency Medicine Network is fully accredited for Stage 1 training by ACEM, offering a diverse and comprehensive experience that prepares trainees for career success.
We are proud of our educational outcomes, including Primary and Fellowship Exam pass rates.
