The Clinical Nurse Consultant Renal Supportive Care provides expert clinical advice to patients, carers, and other health care professionals within their specialty. The Clinical Nurse Consultant Renal Supportive Care develops, facilitates implementation and evaluates care management plans for patients with complex health needs.

The Clinical Nurse Consultant Renal Supportive Care is a Registered Nurse who has responsibility for the functions in a case worker capacity to provide both the direct provision of clinical expertise and integrate the interdisciplinary components of care.

This role involves liaising with patients and their families, nephrologists, GPs, palliative care physicians, geriatricians, social workers, dieticians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other care staff.

Key roles within renal, palliative and community services need to be identified as they are applicable to each renal unit and specifically identified as positions to liaise with in the position description for this role.

Clinical Nurse Consultant at the hub will play an additional lead role in promoting best evidence-based Renal Supportive Care. Renal Supportive Care hinges on the capacity to deliver training to doctors, nurses and allied health staff from the hubs to staff at all networked sites. This will require considerable co-ordination of the education programs as well as awareness of new developments in this field that should be implemented.

Building the Renal Supportive Care capacity of health professionals will be a significant part of the CNC role within the hubs, as well as maintaining strong communication links with the Renal Supportive Care nurse at each renal unit linked with that hub.

Clinical Nurse Consultants are employed as Grade 1, 2 or 3 according to the criteria outlined below, and in line with the NSW Public Health System Nurses' and Midwives' (State) Award.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 1 means: a registered nurse appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, and in addition who has approved post registration nursing qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2 means: a registered nurse appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field. In addition, the employee must have approved post graduate nursing qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed to or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service. An employer may also require a higher qualification in the specialist nursing field where such qualification is considered essential for the performance of the individual position.

  1. Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum five years’ full time equivalent post-qualification experience, with at least three years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field and post-graduate qualifications relevant to the field of practice.
  3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
  5. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence-based research.
  6. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
  7. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
  8. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
  9. Demonstrated previous renal care experience in an acute care facility.
