An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Psychiatrist to join the team at Community Mental Health, part of the Southern NSW – Mental Health.

Southern NSW Local Health District covers a large area of the state, from Goulburn and Crookwell to the Victorian border, and surrounds the ACT on three sides, a total of 44 537sq kms.  It extends from the pristine beaches of the NSW South Coast, the farmlands of the Southern Tablelands, across the picturesque Great Dividing Range and the spectacular Snowy Mountains.

Your Opportunity:

1 . CLINICAL 

  • Provide clinical management and treatment of patients in the SNSW LHD facility under their care, within the scope of practice granted by the SNSW LHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.
  • Ensure detailed patient treatment plans are in place to support the timely management of patients.
  • Ensure a high standard of clinical record documentation is maintained. This includes the completion of the patients' clinical records (including medication charts / orders) to reflect clinical decisions and the keeping of appropriate databases up-to-date.
  • Provision of a consultant service as required by other senior medical staff.
  • Participation in the on call roster for the department as required.
  • Provision of care to non-inpatients attending department ambulatory clinics as required.
  • Be an active participant in clinical activities in the Department.
  • Adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice.
  • Preparedness to participate in the provision of health services at an Area level, if credentialed. 

2. CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT 

  • Comply with SNSW LHD and Facility clinical governance policies and programs.
  • Participate in the facility quality improvement program.
  • Ensure effective clinical handover processes in accordance with facility and SNSWLHD guidelines.
  • Ensure supervision of junior medical staff in accordance with facility and SNSWLHD guidelines.
  • Participate in the facility and / or SNSWLHD clinical governance requirements for ongoing maintenance of professional competence and clinical performance.
  • Participation in peer review and other personal development activities consistent with the relevant specialist medical college requirements to maintain professional standards.
  • Ensure compliance with the standards contained within the Australian Council on Health Care Standards Guidelines for Accreditation. 

3. EDUCATION AND TRAINING 

  • Participation in teaching and training at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education where required by your Head of Department or Clinical Director and in accordance with the requirements of the NSW Health Education Training Institute (HETI)and, if applicable, the relevant specialist medical college vocational training program. 
  • Participate in Departmental training programs and any other training courses specified by facility and/or SLHN management that will enhance personal development, skills and knowledge, and practice requirements.

4. PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT 

  • Participate in the SNSW LHD Performance Management and Development Program and undertake written annual Performance Agreement
  • Demonstrate clinical competency within the clinical privileges granted by the SLHN Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.  

5. OTHER DUTIES 

  • Attend, participate and support administrative meetings as required by the Department Head or Clinical Director Mental Health.
  • Abide by the SNSW LHD Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure familiarity with, and adherence to, all NSW Health Department, SNSW LHD and Facility / Service policies and procedures that are relevant to the performance of the duties.

Secondary appointments within other facilities may occur by mutual agreement.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist (Older Persons specialty), and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Recognised specialist qualifications i.e. Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
  3. Evidence, after full registration, of no less than five years in the practice of medicine in New South Wales Health System or in any other institution deemed by the SNSW LHD to be of equivalent standing inclusive no less than three years in supervised specialist training and/or experience
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  5. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, and research and quality improvement.



Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
