About the Opportunity
The South Western Sydney Local Health District is seeking a dedicated Senior Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) to provide culturally safe and responsive care to Aboriginal clients within violence, abuse, and neglect (VAN) programs.

This permanent full-time role works across the Child Protection Counselling Service (CPCS) and the Sexual Assault Service (SAS), supporting Aboriginal families and communities across the Dharawal, Gundungurra, and Darug Nations.

Areas Covered: Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly, Wingecarribee & surrounding areas.
Hours: Full-time (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM), with travel across the district.

Your Role:
In this role, you’ll walk alongside Aboriginal families, providing holistic care that honours our cultural strengths, values, and traditions. You’ll work closely with clinicians to ensure the spiritual, cultural, and healing needs of our people are at the heart of all care provided.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Aboriginal families with culturally sensitive care in CPCS and SAS services.
  • Strengthen relationships with local Aboriginal communities and organisations, enhancing access to VAN programs.
  • Develop and lead community education, health promotion, and prevention projects rooted in Aboriginal cultural practices.
  • Be a key part of early response initiatives through the Referral Management and Early Response (RMER) Service, guiding clients to appropriate pathways.

  1. Being female is recognised as a genuine occupation qualification and is authorised under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Demonstrated ability to create connections with Aboriginal community to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children, their families and communities with knowledge of intergenerational trauma, family violence, sexual abuse factors that have impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal communities.
  3. Demonstrated experience working with and providing case management to children, young people and adults who have complex trauma experiences and/or complex health issues.
  4. Demonstrated ability to play a leadership role within a multidisciplinary team to enable the provision of culturally responsive services.
  5. Knowledge and awareness of the legal and policy framework governing child protection in NSW and how to support its application in a culturally safe way.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics and social context of violence, abuse and neglect and its effect on Aboriginal children, their families and communities.
  7. Demonstrated experience establishing service networks that enable referral pathways and coordination of service provision.
  8. High level written and verbal communication skills, including computer skills.
  9. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
