Nepean Hospital is a teaching hospital that provides tertiary referral services in emergency care, coronary care, diagnostics, gynaecology, paediatric, neonatal intensive care/ICU, maternity, mental health, rehabilitation, and surgery. The Nepean Campus has recently experienced tremendous growth and aims to support communities within and outside of Sydney’s western suburbs, providing world-class clinical facilities, services, and care.

An opportunity is now available to join the Executive Team located at the Nepean Health Hub, Nepean Hospital in the role of Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery. This position on offer is Permanent Full time.

The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery has responsibility for Operational Management of Access and Demand across Nepean Hospital. 

The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery ensures that facility services are coordinated to ensure the best outcome for patient care delivery is achieved in respect to Care, Access, Redesign and Experience. The position also ensures the development and maintenance of high clinical and professional standards in the provision of patient care and clinical services. The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery is the Deputy Hospital Emergency Management Coordinator for Nepean Hospital and acts as a deputy to the Director of Nursing & Midwifery.


The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery is responsible for the onsite Operational Clinical and Resource Management and Coordination of the facility as delegated from the Director of Nursing and Midwifery and the General Manager. The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery, in collaboration with the Divisional Nurse/Midwifery Managers ensures the daily operational unit management, nurse staffing and other resource requirements for patient care, meet service needs within the allocated budget.

This position has responsibility for guiding the development and implementation of contemporary models of practice and development and monitoring of staff review within the framework of the NBMLHD and has a lead role in setting the management, coordination and monitoring framework for patient care delivery and improving systems and processes within the facility.

The Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery acts as an advocate for patients/clients and staff and promotes consumer involvement in care delivery and provides leadership and service development in areas relating to access and patient flow, afterhours management, clinical support, disaster planning, incident and risk management.

What you will bring to the role:

  1. Registered Nurse and/or Midwife holding current National Registration with the Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and current driver’s licence and willingness to use for work travel purpose.
  2. Relevant post graduate qualifications in clinical leadership or management; or equivalent Senior Nursing and/or Midwifery management experience.
  3. Recent broad clinical and operational management experience at a senior level within a complex health care environment including strategic planning and the development and implementation of Business / Operational Plans.
  4. Demonstrated ability in effective and contemporary utilisation of nursing and midwifery resources.
  5. Demonstrated experience in the successful application of change management principles.
  6. Demonstrated operational, financial, and human resource experience including workforce planning and development at middle management levels.
  7. Demonstrated strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to motivate, inspire and lead staff.
  8. Proven experience in the application of quality improvement and risk management principles
