The Sutherland Hospital is now recruiting to Barkala/ACAU.
The vision for nursing and midwifery at The Sutherland Hospital is to: Build a united team that provides compassionate care to our community through transformational, supportive and holistic nursing and midwifery.

Where you'll be working:

Barkala is a secure ward with a total of 23 beds catering for acutely unwell medical aged patients. Care includes management of acute delirium, acute conditions on the background of chronic illnesses and in some cases, palliative care. Barkala also encompasses The Aged Care Assessment Unit (ACAU) which is a 9 bed unit (with 8 telemetry monitors). Patients who are admitted to ACAU have a rapid comprehensive workup with early interventions that may facilitate discharge back home where appropriate. ACAU works under a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) model of care, which has a 48 hour length of stay. This model of care has dramatically reduced the length of stay of older people with in the Emergency Department, which has demonstrated to improve patient outcomes in this patient cohort.

Clinical Nurse Consultant/Clinical Midwife Consultant Grade 2 means: a registered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the public hospital or public health organisation, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field. In addition, the employee must have approved postgraduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation.

The Clinical Nurse Consultant is a Registered Nurse who has responsibility for ensuring the highest standard of care is achieved for aged care patients within the inpatient and ED setting. Key components of the role include assisting both aged care patients and their carers to navigate their inpatient journey from admission through to discharge. Responsibilities also include the KPI’s & nursing  responsibilities for the Aged Care Assessment Unit (ACAU) Clinical Nurse Consultants are employed as Grade 2 according to the criteria outlined below, and in line with the NSW Public Health System Nurses' and Midwives' (State) Award.

Established in 1958, The Sutherland Hospital campus offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and community services to around 226,000 residents of the Sutherland Shire, colloquially known as ‘The Shire’. Part of the  South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and located in Caringbah, the hospital campus is close to some of Sydney’s great beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes at Cronulla and is close to the beautiful Royal National Park. At Miranda, just a short walk away from the hospital, there is a Westfield Shopping Centre and cinema complex.


Selection Criteria

    1. Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with a minimum 5 years full time equivalent post qualification experience with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field with postgraduate nursing qualifications relevant to the field of practice, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation. 
    2. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
    3. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
    4. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence-based research.
    5. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
    6. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
    7. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centered consultancy with the ability to work independently.
    8. Current NSW Drivers License
