John Hunter Hospital is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Brain Cancer Care Coordinator to join our team. Situated in one of the most comprehensive neurosurgical departments, we are proud to offer advanced patient care to those across the state. In this role, you will be at the forefront of supporting patients and their families, from diagnosis through treatment, surveillance, and end-of-life care.
You will act as a trusted point of contact for patients diagnosed with brain cancer, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver personalised treatment plans. You will provide clinical advice, education, advocacy, and referrals, bridging the gap between patients, families, and specialists, and ensuring that their needs are met with professionalism and compassion.
About the position:
The position is based on Ward G2 – Neuroscience Ward, with expectations to travel to external hospital sites for patient support, where a car will be provided. The role offers flexible start times, with 8-hour shifts on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and requires attendance at the CNS MDT meeting every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 am at John Hunter Hospital. The role includes a week of training with the Brain Cancer Coordinator and presents opportunities for research involvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Meet with patients and families following imaging that suggests a primary brain tumour, providing support and guidance
- Attend medical oncology and radiation oncology appointments alongside patients, offering emotional and clinical support
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to develop tailored treatment plans
- Provide ongoing advocacy for patients and families, ensuring they receive comprehensive care
- Make referrals to services and offer medical advice to prevent unnecessary emergency department visits
- Assist in research initiatives related to brain cancer, including patient consent for biobanking and whole brain donation
- Facilitate patient access to national clinical trials, and work with the Brain Cancer Centre and the Mark Hughes Foundation to advance brain cancer research
Requirements:
- Registered Nurse with current Authority to Practice with AHPRA
- At least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in this specialty field
- Postgraduate nursing qualifications relevant to the position
- Willingness to travel for work purposes
