The Medical Director will be clinically responsible for all inpatient and ambulatory-based mental health and alcohol and other drugs services in the MNCLHD.

The successful applicant will be a current practicing Consultant Psychiatrist with Specialist registration and will provide clinical leadership and will be responsible for overseeing of clinical policies and guidelines. In collaboration with Director Integrated Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs (IMHAOD), develop and monitor both the strategic and business plans, financial plans and workforce plans.
What you'll be doing

For District Integrated Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs Services (IMHAOD) the position will:
  • Provide clinical leadership and will be responsible for overseeing of clinical policies and guidelines.
  • Develop strategies to minimise clinical risk and ensure quality and safety protocols are maintained.
  • In collaboration with Director Integrated Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs (IMHAOD), develop and monitor both the strategic and business plans, financial plans and workforce plans.
  • Work with the IMHAOD Core Executive to develop and implement Models of Care for optimal service delivery based on a recovery focused philosophy of care.
  • Undertake medical workforce planning and development including oversight of annual performance reviews.
  • Develop and support research with a focus on developing and managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure consultation and relationship development occurs with other MNCLHD Clinical Directors of Divisions and Services, particularly when considering new and/or shared services and/or strategies.

MNCLHD features three acute adult inpatient mental health units and one rehabilitation unit:

  • Coffs Harbour Acute Mental Health Unit (CHAMHU): Offers 30 beds, including a specialised section with six acute beds for varied care needs.
  • Kempsey Mental Health Inpatient Unit: A 10-bed voluntary unit, integrated with Port Macquarie Mental Health Inpatient Unit for comprehensive service delivery.
  • Port Macquarie Mental Health Inpatient Unit (Ward 1A): Comprises 12 declared beds, with four dedicated to acute patient care for specialised needs.
  • North Coast Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit: A 20-bed facility catering to both voluntary admissions and individuals detained under the Mental Health Act 2007, with stays ranging from three to six months.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current practicing Consultant Psychiatrist with Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
  2. Demonstrated leadership skills within a complex mental health service with the ability to motivate, inspire and organise staff to achieve organisational, program and professional outcomes.
  3. Demonstrated ability to identify and analyse clinical needs and to recommend and evaluate innovative business plans and organisational strategies in response to those needs. This includes the implementation of innovative and effective models of clinical practice.
  4. Evidence of being an advocate, including involvement with consumers and carer’s groups, media and lobbying experience and ability in health promotion and prevention and recognition of the social environment in which the public mental health service operates.
  5. Demonstrated experience in the application of change management principles and achievement of measurable outcomes.
  6. Proven effective negotiation and communication skills (written and verbal) with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, the public, and Ministry of Health and government representatives.
  7. A comprehensive knowledge of and commitment to health system safety, quality, risk management, improvement systems, research and professional development.
  8. A current NSW Class C driver's licence and willingness to travel consistent with district position responsibilities.
