The Role

 

To assist the Local Court Magistrate with the diversion of defendants who have or are suspected of having a mental illness, mental disorder or a cognitive impairment from the Criminal Justice System (Court and Correctional Centres) into the community.

Please note:  Base location is Orange Local Court.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA 

 

·       Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

·       Holds a relevant post graduate qualification in mental health.

·       Holds a current NSW Drivers Licence.

 

Our location, team, and service

 

Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS) delivered by Justice Health NSW offers mental health support in Local Courts across NSW. This service conducts thorough evaluations and, when suitable, offers suggestions to magistrates for diverting individuals away from custody and into suitable treatment options.

 

The SCCLS is currently expanding to include 58 local courts in rural, regional and metro locations.

  1. Five years clinical experience, including three years in an acute mental health setting with post basic qualifications in mental health.
  1. Proven advanced mental health assessment, risk assessment and diagnostic interviews skills and a working knowledge of the NSW Mental Health Legislation. 
  1. Proven clinical leadership skills including highly developed negotiation, problem solving skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills including verbal and written.
