Ophthalmologist, Visiting Medical Officer – Shellharbour Hospital – Fee for Service Budget - Temporary until 30 June 2027

The Division of Surgery is seeking a motivated and committed Ophthalmologist to work as a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). The position will primarily be based at Shellharbour Hospital, Shellharbour Hospital for elective surgical care. Participation in expert patient assessment and on-call services is required across the Illawarra Hospital Group and the position includes Scope of Practice across the district.

We have a position available for a suitably qualified FRANZCO with experience in general ophthalmology working as an ophthalmologist with exposure in medical retina, oculoplastic, glaucoma, ROP screening and Ophthalmology emergencies to cater the demographics of the area. The service is currently seeking a surgeon to work from Shellharbour public hospital in an all day operating list once a month. Consulting support is provided by one of the local ophthalmology practices. The successful candidate will participate in an on-call roster, 1:5, including weekends and 1:3 months ROP screening. The preferred candidate is preferably living in the local area to look after patients pre and postoperatively and to participate actively in on calls.

Shellharbour Hospital, located on Dharawal Country, is a busy acute care facility which provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medicine, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, and adolescent and adult mental health services on site. It's an accredited healthcare facility with the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) and is recognised as providing a high standard of care to the community.

Located on the beautiful South Coast of NSW, Shellharbour  is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and is only a little over a 1.5 hour drive from Sydney.
