SESLHD covers urban and suburban communities and manages eight public hospitals and one public nursing home:

SESLHD also operates 28 Child and Family Health Centres, 12 Community Health Centres and nine Oral Health Clinics; providing prevention, early intervention and community-based treatment, palliative care and rehabilitation services.

Drug and Alcohol, Mental Health, Breast screening, HIV/AIDS, Public Health, Women's Health, Youth Health, Sexual Health, Imaging and Pathology services are provided at a number of facilities across SESLHD.

The Unaccredited Trainee in General Surgery position is part of the Southern Surgical Skills program Network which includes St George Hospital, Sutherland Hospital and Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. It will be a requirement for you to be seconded to at least one of the hospital other than St George for 3 months.

Terms on offer at St George are Colorectal, Upper GI, Trauma/SAU, Vascular, Peritonectomy Surgery, ICU and General Surgical relief. The General Surgical relief can cover SET trainees at Fairfield, Campbelltown, Coffs Harbour, Nowra, Tweed Head and Albury Hospitals. Shoalhaven offers General Surgical Terms and Sutherland Hospital has a General Surgical Term and a General Surgery/Urology Term.

St George is a principal referral hospital providing a wide range of secondary, tertiary and quaternary services. These hospitals have a full range of diagnostic and consultative services.

The clinical year is divided into 3 month terms through which you will be rotated. There may be an opportunity to stay in a term for a 6 month period, depending on performance and popularity of rotation. Being part of the Southern Surgical Skills Network may mean you are required to have dealings outside the hospital with HETI and CSTC. Within the hospital the network is governed by the Network Management Committee, which meets once a term and your participation in this meeting is welcome. This Term is supported by the Surgical Superintendent at St George Hospital.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, in a complex clinical environment. The doctor is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.

Positions in the Surgical Skills Training Networks are for junior doctors who are working towards entry into the Surgical Education and Training Program with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. These networked positions require    rotations through several hospitals. 

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the doctors skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care. 2.  This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy PD2023_022. Successful applicants to the role must provide vaccination history and pathology as part of the application documentation and be certified as compliant before employment can commence. A link will be provided once deemed successful

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Completed GSSE (or MRCS or equivalent). Completed/waitlisted a minimum of two RACS required courses; CCrISP, EMST/ATLS, ASSET, CLEAR
  3. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to the General Surgical Training Program (GSET) and evidence of progress towards and application.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills and judgment and expertise.
  6. Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Interest and ability to be involve in departmental teaching/presentation/research and student mentoring.
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.
