Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital is a specialised tertiary referral hospital, teaching hospital and community hospital, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma for numerous specialties.

We are the busiest ED in the state and a major trauma centre for Northern NSW. John Hunter Hospital is a great place to develop your career as we are delivering services to people of all ages, from birth to childhood and adulthood.

Other regional hospitals part of the HNELHD Network are Belmont, Maitland, Tamworth and Manning Hospital. Other peripheral sites on rotation are Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour

What you'll be doing

The purpose of the Unaccredited Cardiology Trainee Network position is to provide effective medical services to 
patients under supervision in a complex clinical environment whilst encouraging professional development for the 
successful candidates in cardiology. The position as an unaccredited cardiology trainee within the Hunter New 
England Local Health district allows advanced exposure to cardiology with an expectation of contributing to teaching 
and research over the period. Time will be spent at Maitland Hospital attached to the cardiology service, 
encompassing inpatient and outpatient management, in addition to experience in non invasive cardiology 
assessment (transthoracic/transoesophageal echocardiography, treadmill stress testing, stress echocardiography, CT 
coronary angiography and cardiac MR imaging). The position also includes a rotation to Belmont District Hospital 
covering the cardiology inpatient service, including regular exposure to echocardiography. It is also anticipated the 
successful applicants will provide supervision, support and teaching for the Belmont and Maitland hospital SRMO 
staff. This position will facilitate an enhanced level of patient care while offering further training in cardiology. The 
unaccredited cardiology trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team, 
deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, and maintaining confidentiality. 
Involvement in research contributions is considered essential. 

RESPIRATOR USE NSW Health workers may be required to use a respirator, as part of their appointment with 
NSW Health. Where a respirator is required for use, workers will be instructed in their safe use; including donning, 
doffing and fit checking. Staff may be required to complete fit testing to selected respirator/s to assess their facial fit/ 
seal. At all times when a health worker is required to use a respirator, the health worker must not have any facial hair 
present. Processes are in place to support workers that need to keep facial hair due to religious observance 
requirements and/ or health conditions. 



 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum 4 years post graduate experience which includes 12 months experience working as a medical officer in an Australian Public Hospital or equivalent (completion of physicians exam in anticipation of future cardiology advanced training preferred).
  3. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  4. Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to modify communication style to suit audience.
  5. Evidence of commitment to self-education and continued professional development with experience in teaching.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
  7. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  8. Ability to work at the facilities within the Network (Greater Newcastle Area) to deliver patient care and preparedness and ability to participate in a 24 hrs shift work roster.
