Position Summary
To become a member of the Intensive Care trainee team delivering advanced Intensive Care support. Suitable for Intensive Care Advanced Trainees seeking to gain further experience and training in Intensive Care including sub specialties such as Trauma, Cardiothoracics, Neuro-ICU, ECMO and paediatric ICU. Demonstrated commitment to CICM training is an essential requirement.
Where you'll be working
The John Hunter Hospital ICU is a Level 6 referral centre for critically ill patients in the Hunter New England, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts. It is the default centre for Trauma, Neurosurgery, Stroke, Vascular, Cardiothoracic and major General Surgery, as well as Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology. The ICU is accredited for all aspects of CICM training including paediatrics through a 6-month rotation in JHH PICU which is one of only three tertiary PICUs in NSW.
The 796-bed hospital is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle, with JHH ICU aiming to be a training destination through strong educational support for both the CICM First and Second Part examinations.
JHH is the only trauma centre in NSW outside the Sydney metropolitan area and is the state’s busiest trauma hospital and the second busiest in Australia.

What you'll be doing
· Suitably experienced medical officers will gain further experience and training in Intensive Care Medicine whilst undertaking learning and professional development activities with the aim of progressing to a Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).
· Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of intensive care patients whilst ensuring a high level of documentation and communication with home teams
· The day-to-day assessment, management and plan-formulation of intensive care patients with regular patient and family communication regarding the nature of their condition and treatment. All decisions concerning patients will be in consultation with their immediate supervisor.
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completed a minimum four years of postgraduate with 12 months recent experience in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine
- Current Advanced Trainee registered under the training pathway of the Australasian College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) working towards completion of the CICM second part examination
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a complex clinical environment, applying strong clinical judgment, decision-making, and knowing when to seek appropriate advice
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to support effective patient management.
- Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to build strong collegial relationships across all healthcare disciplines and foster a positive workplace culture.
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours rosters to deliver patient care.
