Fixed Term 2.0FTE Postgraduate Fellow
Department of Haematology - Blood Transplant and Cell Therapies
Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position(s) in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). The position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Haematology.
The Blood Transplant and Cell Therapies (BTCT) Program at Westmead Hospital is the largest transplant and cellular therapy centre in NSW with highly developed clinical and laboratory research interests. It consists of a clinical service that undertakes autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants and administers immune effector & CAR-T cells using the BTCT & Sydney Cellular Therapy (SCTL) laboratories to support the process of blood transplantation and cell therapies at Westmead Hospital, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Nepean Hospital and Wollongong Hospital.
The BTCT clinical service receives referrals from within the Western Sydney & Nepean/Blue Mountains LHDs as well as patients from the Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra regions and interstate referrals. The program performs over 100 transplants per year with the majority being allogeneic stem cell transplants from sibling, unrelated, haploidentical or occasional cord blood donors and the remaining being autologous transplants. The Cellular Therapy service is one of two NSW designated immune effector cell administration sites and administers commercial CAR T-cells & antigen-specific IEC therapies. The service undertakes approximately 100 cellular infusions for a wide variety of therapeutic and research indications.
The BTCT & SCTL laboratories are the most active transplant & cellular therapy processing laboratories in NSW and undertake 500-600 processing procedures annually including complex cell manipulations such as CD34 selection. In addition to stem cell processing, the laboratory has a highly active cellular therapeutics arm involved in the production of pathogen and tumour specific T cells. Westmead Hospital is at the forefront of translational clinical research into the use of pathogen and tumour specific immune effector cell therapeutics, and has multiple active investigator initiated and pharmaceutical sponsored clinic trials in the field.
Successful applicants will deliver all aspects of clinical care for patients undergoing blood transplant and immune effector cell therapies as inpatients or outpatients at Westmead Hospital, including participating in Haematology department on call rosters under the supervision of the Blood Transplant and Cellular Therapies (BTCT) Director, the clinical lead for immune effector cell therapies or their delegates with professional accountability to the Director of Clinical Haematology, Director Cancer Services and the General Manager Westmead Hospital.
