The Aboriginal Cultural Capability Team Leader provides strategic and operational leadership to cultivate an organisational culture that is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal staff, patients and community members. 

This role plays a critical part in driving sustainable cultural change by building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, strengthening Aboriginal cultural capability, providing cultural guidance and influencing organisational practices to embed cultural safety at every level.

This role is also responsible for leading a team of Cultural Capability Facilitators to enhance workforce capability, inclusion and wellbeing. In this capacity, the Aboriginal Cultural Capability Team Leader is expected to manage the workflow of the team, provide professional and cultural supervision, meet all necessary policy and reporting requirements expected of staff occupying a formal leadership position within NSW Health and work closely with the Manager of Organisational Development, Culture and Leadership to build engagement in Aboriginal cultural capability work across the organisation. 

Make a meaningful difference by leading cultural capability initiatives that strengthen culturally safe, respectful and responsive healthcare services for Aboriginal people and communities. 

  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of organisation-wide cultural capability initiatives and training programs, including Respecting the Difference. 
  • Provide expert cultural advice and strategic guidance to embed Aboriginal perspectives into policies, programs and service delivery. 
  • Support workforce capability uplift through mentoring, guidance and culturally responsive leadership. 
  • Build strong relationships with Aboriginal communities and partners to support culturally informed and locally responsive approaches. 
  • Contribute to organisational initiatives that strengthen inclusion, cultural safety and Aboriginal workforce and community outcomes.

We are looking for someone who: 

  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with strong cultural knowledge, community connection and understanding of Aboriginal communities. 
  • Demonstrates experience leading cultural capability, workforce development or organisational change initiatives that promote culturally safe and inclusive practices. 
  • Builds and sustains strong collaborative relationships with Aboriginal communities, stakeholders, leaders and multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Provides culturally informed leadership, mentoring and guidance that supports workforce capability and inclusion. 
  • Demonstrates strong organisational, project management and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and influence positive change. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to balance strategic thinking with efficient and effective delivery of operational outcomes. 
 

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/ or equivalent experience, with demonstrated high-level skills in leadership, partnering with stakeholders and the development and delivery of cultural capability training initiatives.
  • Experience in creating, managing, and implementing training and initiatives, preferably with a focus on cultural capability, safety, and workforce development that promotes Aboriginal perspectives.
  • Proven ability to strategically engage with internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to collaborate with Aboriginal communities, leadership teams and external organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams effectively, particularly through coaching/mentoring, debriefing, advocacy, professional development and fostering a culturally safe and inclusive workplace.
  • Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
