SWSLHD Mental Health Service is seeking a dynamic and experienced Clinical Nurse Consultant (Grade 2) to join the Bankstown/Liverpool inpatient mental health service. This is an exciting opportunity for an expert mental health nurse leader to contribute to a progressive, consumer-focused service committed to clinical excellence and evidence-based practice. The CNC is an expert practitioner who provides strong clinical leadership to facilitate and embed evidence-based practice across the service. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, consumers, carers, and key stakeholders, the CNC plays a pivotal role in promoting clinical excellence, advancing research initiatives, developing and implementing clinical practice standards, and evaluating care outcomes. The role is central to ensuring effective coordination and management of care within the specialty area. Bankstown and Liverpool Mental Health Services comprise seven inpatient units ,including Adult Acute, High Dependency, Sub-Acute, Rehabilitation, and Psychiatric Emergency Care. These units provide comprehensive inpatient services and are recognised as centres of excellence, delivering compassionate, trauma-informed care to a culturally, socially, and economically diverse community.
As part of a dedicated and supportive mental health nursing leadership team, the CNC will contribute to the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives and innovative models of care. The service fosters a strong culture of safety, consumer advocacy, and continuous learning. Professional development is actively encouraged, with opportunities to engage in further study, expand clinical expertise, and strengthen leadership capability. The Mental Health Unit works closely with community services to support seamless integration back into community living, improving quality of life for consumers. Are You the Right Fit?
- Must have Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Must have at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time experience in the specialty field.
- Approved post graduate Mental Health Nursing qualification or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the organisation .
- Leads by example, inspires confidence, and supports best-practice mental healthcare.
- Emotional intelligence - Demonstrates empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to manage sensitive situations calmly and professionally.
- Upholds clinical governance, ethical practice, and confidentiality standards. High level of critical thinking as it relates to the delivery of advanced evidenced based mental health nursing care .
- High level of interpersonal and negotiation skills with an ability to work with multiple stakeholders across the organisation .
- Expert knowledge in mental health nursing to provide safe compassionate quality care that is culturally responsive.
- Resilience & Composure - Maintains professionalism in high-stress or crisis situations
Selection Criteria

Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)At least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field. In addition, the employee must have approved postgraduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which the employee is appointed, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation.
2. Can you provide a specific example of how you have demonstrated clinical leadership within mental health to improve outcomes for consumers with complex health needs, including how you developed, implemented, and evaluated a care management plan?
3. How have you contributed to strategic service planning and the integration of research and education into clinical practice to ensure alignment with NSW Health policies, professional standards, and the Code of Conduct?
