Achieve Something Great
The Peri‑Infant Mental Health Service (PIMHS) is offering a meaningful opportunity for an Aboriginal Identified Mental Health Worker to join a compassionate, multidisciplinary team supporting women, parents and carers who are pregnant or have a child under two. PIMHS provides specialist care to families experiencing severe, acute, or complex mental health concerns, and is committed to delivering safe, culturally responsive services for Aboriginal people. As part of a team that includes Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nurses, Midwives, Clinical Nurse Consultants and Aboriginal Health Workers, you will play a central role in shaping how culturally informed mental health care is delivered across South Western Sydney. This position offers the chance to make a real difference in the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal parents and families during the crucial perinatal period. You will work closely with clinicians to ensure care is both clinically sound and culturally safe, while also strengthening links between PIMHS and the local Aboriginal community.
Are You the Right Fit?
We are seeking an Aboriginal person who is passionate about culture, community, and supporting the wellbeing of Aboriginal families. You may have experience in mental health, community health, or child and family services — or you may be looking to transition into the health sector with strong community connections and a commitment to learning.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, kinship, community strengths, and social and emotional wellbeing.
- Confidence engaging with Aboriginal families and community organisations.
- Willingness to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary mental health team
- Ability to contribute an Aboriginal cultural lens to assessment, intervention, and care planning.
- An interest in ongoing education and skill development, including further study in mental health where required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to advocate for culturally safe care.
- A passion for improving access to culturally appropriate mental health services for Aboriginal families.
Selection Criteria
To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below.
1. In this role being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement. Tell us about your mob and connection to culture?
2. Describe your connection to Aboriginal culture and community, and explain how this would support your work with Aboriginal parents, families and the broader community within a mental health setting.
3. Provide an example of a time you supported an Aboriginal person or family through a challenging situation. What was your role, what approaches did you use, and what did you learn?
4. Explain how you would contribute an Aboriginal cultural perspective when working with mental health clinicians to plan and deliver culturally safe care. What strengths would you bring to a team environment?
5. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
