Come and join the Coastal Paediatrics Team in Southern NSW
We are seeking a General Paediatrician with a passion for rural medicine to join the paediatric team at South East Regional Hospital. This is a 6 month maternity leave relief position with a possibility of extension for someone wanting to a taste of rural paediatric life.
South East Regional Hospital is in the beautiful Bega Valley on the Sapphire Coast of NSW. Bega is 429 kilometres south of Sydney, 228 kilometres from Canberra and 174 kilometres from the NSW Snow fields. Nearby Merimbula (32 kilometres) offers a regional airport with a short 55 minute flight to Sydney and daily flights to Melbourne. There are quality private and public schools in the area.
South East Regional Hospital Bega is a Level 4 Paediatric Unit with 6 paediatric inpatient beds plus 4 short stay beds. The service is currently the receiving hospital for children requiring admission across the Coastal Network. The service supports a well-staffed and experienced emergency department with approximately 4000 paediatric emergency presentations annually at South East Regional Hospital. The service provides telehealth consultation and support to emergency departments at other hospitals across the Coastal Network who see a further 4000 paediatric emergency presentations annually. The service at South East Regional Hospital has a 2 bed special care nursery supporting a Level 3 maternity service with approximately 300 births per annum. The service also provides specialist telehealth neonatal support to Eurobodalla nursery. The service also has a varied outpatient paediatric caseload comprising challenging and interesting paediatric medicine. In a true networked model, the service provides regular specialist outpatient clinics both locally at Bega and through outreach clinics in Eurobodalla and Monaro regions.
The service is a training site for medical students in paediatric medicine from Australian National University. The service also accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for Advanced Training in Paediatrics & Child Health (rural paediatrics/community & developmental paediatrics). Upskilling of staff across the Coastal Network in the area of Paediatric and Neonatal medicine is a strategic focus. There is a strong emphasis on teaching with an Education and Simulation Centre based at South East Regional Hospital.

What you'll be doing:
The Paediatrician will provide expert paediatric medical assessment and management of patients within the Department of Paediatrics. Role also includes a key clinical role in teaching, supervision and support of junior medical staff. The position will be primarily located at South East Regional Hospital but may be varied as agreed with the District Director of Medical Services and District Medical Lead (Paediatrics) and as approved via Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilities in Southern NSW. The Staff Specialist will also be expected to work in outpatient clinics and provision of education and training in the SNSWLHD Coastal Network. This position also involves participation in a 24/7 on call roster to South East Regional Hospital with telehealth consultation services to hospitals in the Coastal Network. The scope of practice and clinical privileges are defined in the scope of clinical practice for general paediatrics Southern NSW LHD attached to this document.
Selection Criteria:
Recognised specialist qualifications - Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and/or equivalent specialist recognition. Suitable applicants who are expected to be awarded their Fellowship within six months will be considered and Advanced Trainees nearing completion of their training are encouraged to apply.
Demonstrated recent clinical experience and competence in general paediatric medicine including acute care, neonatal care and outpatient general paediatrics (including learning, development and behavioural medicine). Demonstrated interest and skills in paediatric service development, innovative models of care, and project leadership is desirable.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and build collaborative partnerships towards a successful outcome
Strong skills in training and capacity building with demonstrated commitment and skills in teaching, continuing self-education, research and quality improvement.
Demonstrated effective clinical and interpersonal communication skills including effective written, verbal and interpersonal skills and use of information technology.
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety.
Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time and current licence to drive in NSW.

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
