Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is seeking experienced Staff Specialists to join our Hospital in the Home Service.

     

We are looking for a Staff Specialist Emergency Hospital in the Home. The primary purpose of the role of Staff Specialist in Emergency Hospital in the Home, in this case by a staff specialist with specialist training as a Physician, is to provide high quality diagnostic, management and consultative specialty services in the Emergency Hospital in the Home service and to participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities within the HITH Department and Hospital as required. 
  
The Staff Specialist in Emergency Hospital in the Home (EHITH) provides clinical assessment and management of patients living at home in Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) in liaison with Balmain, Royal Prince Alfred, Canterbury and Concord Hospitals, NSW Ambulance Service, Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN), Sydney District Nursing, SLHD Residential Aged Care Outreach services, Access Care Team, SLHD Allied Health, the patient’s general practitioner and other related services. 
  
Assessment and care is undertaken in the community, principally for frail older patients, and delivered by staff with equipped vehicles. The Staff Specialist will work in combination with paramedics, registered nurses  
and allied health practitioners (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers etc). Patients will be referred to the EHITH service via NSW Ambulance call service, by other medical specialists and by general practitioners.   
  
The Staff Specialist will work across SLHD, and a second service is proposed for Concord and Canterbury Hospital. Therefore, there may be rotations of staff to these facilities when required to cover leave and roster gaps. Assistance to the SHLD HITH services may be required when HITH activity is high or there are unplanned roster gaps. 
  
The Staff Specialist in Emergency Hospital in the Home (EHITH) will ensure a high standard of professional performance and encouragement of an academic environment which supports education, research and professional development. 
   
Medical practitioner, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and/or other equivalent specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award.
   
Positions are currently available. In addition, applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within two months from the beginning of the 2026 Clinical Year on 2 February 2026, may be considered.
   
Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Staff Specialist (State) Award.
