About the Role 

Community Mental Health Services provide a range of services designed to help support the recovery and help consumer stay well in the community. The team provide specialist services for young people, children and families, adults, and older people. Community mental health services include a specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Team, bilingual mental health workers and Peer Support Workers. Our main sites are at Canterbury, Croydon, Camperdown, Marrickville, and Redfern Community Health Services. The role will be based at Camperdown.

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse educated and authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role. The NP role includes the assessment and management of patients using nursing knowledge and skills and may include but is not limited to initiation of diagnostic investigations, prescribing of medications and direct referral of patients to other health care professionals. The NP role is grounded in the nursing profession's values, knowledge, theories and practice and provides innovative and flexible health care delivery that complements other health care providers. 

The NP enables the Acute Care Service (ACS) model of care, conducting mental health triages, risk assessment, comprehensive mental health assessments, care/management plans for consumers and discharge planning within the community, Emergency Department and inpatient MHS. Recovery and trauma informed care being core elements.

The Acute Care Service operates a 7-day service from 08:00hrs until 22:00hrs. Therefore, the position will be a rotating one on a 7 day rotating roster.

Ideal Candidate

  1. Current Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), authorised to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the NSW Nurses & Midwifery Registration Board or working towards such a qualification. If transitional, 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent clinical experience in the specialty of the Nurse Practitioner role.
  2. Demonstrated ability to articulate sound reasoning behind clinical, diagnostic and prescribing decisions that are informed by evidence based practice and made within a nursing context.
