About the Role

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation’s most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities.

  

The Public Health Senior Epidemiologist is responsible for providing high-level technical expertise and support to the Public Health Unit and LHD facilities to prepare for and respond to infectious disease emergencies and other acute public health problems. In addition, the role is responsible for the oversight and management of the Public Health Unit’s research and education programs and governance.

  

The position also contributes directly to the day to day teamwork within the unit, especially in response to communicable diseases.  

  

The position has three major areas of work: epidemiologic surveillance, preparing and responding to public health incidents and emergencies, and  facilitating and supporting research  and education across the Unit.

Ideal Candidate

  • High-level technical expertise in epidemiologic methods and the investigation of public health problems, including a Masters degree in Public Health, or equivalent experience. 
  • Knowledge of epidemiological methods relevant to the investigation and control of communicable diseases and investigation of environmental health issues. Including demonstrated competence in the use of databases, statistical and other software programs (R, SQL, SAS) for the capture, analysis and presentation of data. 
  • Experience and understanding of communicable disease control methods, surveillance and/or research. 
  • Experience in planning and program management with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders to develop public health preparedness plans. 
  • Ability to work co-operatively with colleagues in a multidisciplinary team, with internal partners within the health service and external agencies.
