The Peer Support Worker uses their lived experience of mental health in a purposeful way that provides hope for consumers, and practical strategies that support recovery and independence. 

This is an integrated role within Community Mental Health with a focus on promoting healthy lifestyles. This role will support consumers across four main areas:

  • Developing and promoting good physical and mental health.
  • Access to housing, employment and education goals.
  • Re-discovering or building a sense of purpose and personal identity.
  • Forming active connections to the community of the consumers' choice.

Peer Support Workers are integrated within a multidisciplinary team made up of mental health clinicians including occupational therapists, social workers, nurses, psychologist and psychiatrist. Peer Support Workers work within the model of care for a Community Mental Health Core Team. Peer Support Workers work directly with individuals to promote recovery and physical health, as well as facilitating numerous groups, often with a physical health focus such as exercise groups. Peer Support Work is always person-led, and provides support contingent on peer choice.  

Child protection – child protection is the core responsibility of all who work in the child and adolescent mental health
service. All staff are required to have detailed knowledge of and comply with policies and procedures relating to Child
Protection and the NSW Health Code of Conduct. All clinicians are responsible for ensuring that identified issues are
documented, escalated and action occurs as appropriate.

Ideal Candidate

  • Personal experience of mental distress/illness and demonstrated experience using recovery principles. A degree in a relevant field is required for payment at Graduate rate.
  • Ability and foundational knowledge to facilitate physical health focused groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to plan, implement and evaluate group and individual peer led interventions
  • Understanding of and commitment to recovery oriented services and consumer involvement in service design, implementation and evaluation.
