Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital is a specialised tertiary referral hospital, teaching hospital and community hospital, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma for numerous specialities.
We are the busiest ED in the state and a major trauma centre for Northern NSW. John Hunter Hospital is a great place to develop your career as we are delivering services to people of all ages, from birth to childhood and adulthood.
Other regional hospitals part of the HNELHD Network are Belmont, Maitland, Tamworth and Manning Hospital. Other peripheral sites on rotation are Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour
What you'll be doing
The John Hunter Hospital Palliative Care Consultation Service currently receives over 1000 new referrals each year with a case mix of approximately 40% malignant and 60% non-malignant diagnoses. The Consultation Service provides holistic Palliative Care including complex symptom management, end of life care, referral to the nearby Calvary Mater Newcastle Mercy Hospice, linkage with surrounding Community Outreach Services and bereavement services.
The Department has been recently enhanced and is founded on strong relationships and ongoing education and engagement across medical, nursing and allied health disciplines. It has evolving research projects looking at patient experience in the inpatient setting, transition from inpatient to community-based palliative care and a recent successful in-patient primary palliative care team (INPPACT) link nurse education program.
Staffing includes 1.5 FTE Palliative Medicine Staff Specialists, 0.4 FTE General Physician and an interdisciplinary team including Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Aboriginal Health Worker, Social Work and Admin. The Service has close ties to the aforementioned Department of Palliative Care at Calvary Mater Newcastle and surrounding Palliative Care services as well as the Hunter Integrated Pain Service and Kidney Supportive Care Service. Advanced Trainees have the opportunity to participate in additional specialist Palliative and Supportive Care outpatient clinics including Kidney Supportive Care and Motor Neurone Disease.
Advanced Trainees are embedded within the team, working closely with all disciplines. Clinical supervision is provided by Palliative Medicine Staff Specialists. Advanced Trainees have the opportunity to work independently with immediate supervision available at any time via phone or in person.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- RACP advanced trainees (Palliative Medicine and other subspecialties), Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine trainees, Clin. Foundations in Palliative Medicine (RACP) trainees, Faculty of Pain Medicine trainees and Family Medicine Program trainees or as detailed under Qualifications above
- Completed at least four years residency since graduation
- Current Drivers license
- Proven satisfactory clinical performance, supported by submissions of two current referees
- Demonstrated sound, effective communication skills with patients, medical and surgical colleagues and other staff
- Demonstrated commitment to own personal and professional development
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after- hours overtime and on-call rosters and the required rotations both between services and geographical location to deliver patient care (including rural locations if applicable to the stream)
