Join the wonderful team of Social Workers at St George Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated social worker to join the Social Work Department at St George Hospital. This 2-year temporary full-time position working in the community with the Quick Response Program within our Aged Care and Rehab Team. The role is part of an MDT, working with patients and families in their home environment in the community once they have been discharged from St George Hospital. You will be part of a large, dedicated and highly skilled department working with culturally and socially diverse patients and their families. All Social Work positions are required to provide support to other areas within the hospital as needed. Applicants are advised that at times the position involves working with vulnerable people and people experiencing trauma. Applicants are also advised that this position includes ongoing participation in the after-hours on call crisis service. We appreciate that Social Work in public health can be challenging, so we have a suite of wellbeing initiatives occurring across the department to make sure we’re caring for ourselves as well as our patients.
The Role
Plan, coordinate, and implement in-depth levels of clinical expertise and extensive specialised knowledge within a social work specialty area in order to provide high quality counselling, advocacy and therapeutic care to the patients, their carers and families of the facility consistent with NSW Health, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) policies, procedures and standards.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated social worker to join the Social Work Department at St George Hospital. This temporary full time position is available until 30 June 2027 and is located within the St George Hospital.
This senior social work position works as part of the multidisciplinary team aimed at providing short term (approx. 6 weeks) support and case management for vulnerable members of the local community over the age of 65yo. Referrals to the position generally come through inpatient wards, local GPs or via self-referral. Some of the clinical work may include referrals for carer stress, people transitioning into RACF/respite, screening and response to elder abuse, those requiring implementation or increase in services at home, and the psychosocial implications of living with dementia and cognitive impairment.

The position is also required to provide support to other areas within the hospital as required. Selection Criteria
- Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and eligibility for membership of the AASW
- Extensive post graduate clinical experience in relevant specialty area with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning
- Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels
- Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery and to guide and support others in providing service excellence, with the capacity to provide clinical supervision to other staff
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature
- Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise your own and team work requirements effectively within agreed time frames
- Demonstrated experience in providing crisis interventions and the ability to participate in the After Hours Crisis On-Call Social Work Service.
