The Female Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer role will be responsible for supporting and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their families, it is an opportunity to provide culturally appropriate health care around women’s business and health issues , the female AHLO will be required to work effectively with patients, families, hospital staff and other agencies within a clinical and community setting.

The Female Aboriginal Hospital Liaison will be based at St George Hospital within the Social Work Team. The position will be linked into a winder Aboriginal Health Workforce and will be supported by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Aboriginal Health Directorate.

This position is Permanent Part Time working Monday to Friday and hours are flexible working up to 12 hours per week.

The Female Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) is responsible for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when dealing with Women’s health- related issues and Business at St George Hospital (SGH). The Female AHLO is required to work effectively with hospital staff and other agencies in the community, in order to provide support and assistance to persons and families receiving care at SGH.

Selection Criteria

  1. Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). It is a genuine occupational requirement that this position is occupied by a female. An applicant’s gender is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 31(2)(h) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, including historical contexts which may influence Aboriginal health, and national and state policies/strategies relating to Aboriginal health.
  4. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads, to work independently as well as part of a team and to work within a hospital setting.
  5. Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
  6. Knowledge of confidentiality, documentation and information management, relevant legislation, ethics and duty of care, and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment.
  7. Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (e.g. MS Word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets).
  8. Knowledge of quality improvement and experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
