The Forensic & Analytical Science Service (FASS) is seeking a Senior Scientific Officer to join our Forensic Biology/DNA unit, with opportunities for both immediate placement and inclusion in our talent pool for future permanent and temporary full time, part time and casual opportunities. Join our dynamic team of scientific professionals providing world-class forensic biology and DNA analysis services for the people of NSW.   

The Forensic and Analytical Science Service (FASS) provides independent, objective analysis to law enforcement bodies including the police, local coroners and public prosecutors in areas such as forensic medicine, forensic biology and DNA, forensic toxicology, drug toxicology, illicit drugs, and more. It also provides analytical testing for NSW Health and local government bodies and supports public health needs.

What you'll be doing

Apply advanced scientific knowledge and experience in the field of Forensic Biology and DNA Analysis to the provision of expert certificates with varying levels of complexity, ensuring the accurate, quality, timely and customer-focused provision of tests and reports in a NATA accredited Unit.

  1. A Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science or Applied Science with a major relevant to the Forensic Biology/DNA Unit, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the Forensic Biology/DNA Unit from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Demonstrated experience or extensive knowledge in methods, instrumentation and emerging technologies relevant to the field of Forensic Biology, gained in an accredited laboratory or relevant environment.
  3. Demonstrated extensive experience in the interpretation and reporting of complex forensic DNA results in an accredited forensic laboratory. 
  4. Demonstrated experience in the provision of expert certificates or able to meet required competencies to provide expert certificates, or demonstrated progress towards the required competencies to provide expert certificates for court. 
  5. Ability to monitor and prioritise workflow effectively to ensure unit objectives and performance targets are met within specified timeframes while maintaining high quality standards.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to give lectures/presentations to appropriate parties, provide evidence in courts and build strong stakeholder relationships.
  7. Demonstrated advanced knowledge and understanding of current legislation, policies and requirements that impact the unit and accreditation standards.
  8. Demonstrated capacity to adopt and model the NSWHP RITES values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence and Safety.
