Take the next step in your Pathology career with an exciting opportunity at the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology at Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you’ll be working in a cutting-edge facility within one of Australia’s largest public Anatomical Pathology laboratories, an environment designed to challenge, inspire, and support your professional growth. Serving as a statewide diagnostic hub for complex cases such as bone and soft tissue sarcoma, intricate head and neck resections, organ transplants, and advanced molecular pathology, this role offers invaluable exposure to a wide and highly specialised caseload, allowing you to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.

What you'll be doing
The role supports a high‑volume diagnostic laboratory delivering critical pathology results for tissue specimens obtained through biopsies and organ resections. It involves a diverse range of hands‑on laboratory duties, including basic tissue dissection, embedding, microtomy, and the preparation of special stains, all contributing to accurate and timely diagnostic outcomes.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
