Where you'll be working
The Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) Headspace youth mental health initiative is a new multidisciplinary service providing mental health intervention for young people aged 12 - 24, referred through Headspace and requiring more specialised intervention than provided by Headspace, but below the threshold for the community CYMHS service. The program aims for provide trauma informed, recovery focused assessment, therapy, and systemic intervention, and to improve service integration by facilitating care pathways between headspace and CYMHS and vice versa.
 
The program will provide in-reach to Chatswood and Brookvale Headspace centres, providing collocated services with headspace under the clinical and operational governance of the NLSHD CYMHS. 
 

The CYMHS headspace youth mental health initiative will work alongside and be integrated with our established CYMHS programs including Brolga adolescent inpatient unit, community CYMHS intake and emergency department in-reach consultation, Safeguards, the outreach service for children and adolescents, and the Youth Response Team, among others.

 
About the Role
Focusing on emerging or first-episode psychosis and other moderate to severe mental health concerns, and embedded within Headspace, the service provides assessment, evidence-based interventions, and collaborative care planning with young people, families, and support systems, ensuring seamless, trauma-informed care between Headspace and LHD services. 

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist will provide expert clinical and operational leadership, working closely with CYMHS and headspace teams to ensure high-quality, integrated care. The role also contributes to teaching, supervision, research, and quality improvement within the District, under NSLHD’s clinical governance and endorsed practice standards. 
 
 
Purpose of the Position
You will provide clinical management and treatment of patients under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of clinical practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee. 
  
The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within NSLHD. 

 
This position is temporary with the possibility of extension based on performance, funding and need
 

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Psychiatrist. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  3. Sound clinical knowledge in Psychiatry demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty.
  4. Demonstrated clinical, diagnostic and technical skills commensurate with functioning as an independent Psychiatry Consultant including advanced knowledge and skills in the assessment and treatment of child, adolescent and youth mental health problems consistent with the senior nature of the position
  5. High level interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team environment including skills in managing complex mental health problems in a multidisciplinary context and advanced skills in consultation at the individual, group and service level
  6. Demonstrated participation in and commitment to undergraduate, postgraduate, interdisciplinary teaching and education, including research, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management. This includes willingness to be involved in academic activities (teaching and research) and experience in teaching psychiatry to medical, nursing and allied health students/staff, psychiatry trainees and others as required and a willingness for ongoing involvement in such activities
  7. Preparedness to participate in any on-call service, including on-call rosters already existing or established.
  8. Unrestricted NSW Drivers Licence and the ability to drive
