An exciting opportunity exists for a Clinical Trial Manager to join the Medical and Radiation Oncology at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Where you'll be working
Medical and Radiation Oncology at Royal North Shore Hospital.

What you'll be doing
The purpose of the position is to lead the planning, establishment, development and management of multi-disciplinary clinical trials within the  Cancer and Palliative Care Network, NSLHD It involves the development and management of strategic plans to conduct cancer clinical trial research to achieve the aims and goals of the NSW Government through the NSW  Cancer Institute within the NSLHD. 
To achieve these aims: 

  • Ensure research is conducted in accordance with the protocol policy, legislation, ethical requirements and guidelines for Good Clinical Practice to achieve high quality data for research.
  • Provide high level expert advice and judgement whilst obtaining ethical approval to conduct trials through National Human Research Committees, Governance officers and the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
  • Formally report quarterly to the NSW Government through the NSW Cancer Institute on the status of all Clinical Trials being conducted within the area trials units.
  • Have authority to negotiate with senior medical staff, researchers, teaching and research organisations, Contract Research Organisations, National and International pharmaceutical Companies, Collaborative Groups, tertiary institutions, the NSW Cancer Institute and other potential research partners and funding bodies to ensure clinical trial proposals fall within approved guidelines.
  • Manage and be responsible for development of long term strategies to ensure adequate income is available to maintain the units ongoing success considering the trials units within the Cancer and Palliative Care Network, NSLHD are financially independent.
  • Evaluate new trial proposals with reference to target populations and required trial procedures to ensure the unit has the capacity to conduct these trials according to Good Clinical Research Practise (GCP).
  • Negotiate financial contracts for services which need outsourcing for trial conduct including but not restricted to radiology, pathology, cardiology, dermatology and ophthalmology.
  • Provide leadership, management and direction to ensure trial facilities and infrastructure are available and maintained for successful trial conduct.
  • Develop a business strategy and provide high level expertise to implement highly complex early phase 1 trials into the area. Actively participate in the Cancer and Palliative Care Networks management meetings and represent the unit to external groups and committees.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  2. Experience in the management of a large complex Clinical Trials Unit involving trials ranging from phase 1-phase 4 and multidisciplinary collaborations between numerous specialities with demonstrated capacity to manage difficult and complex staffing issues in a sensitive manner.
  3. Sound understanding of legislation, codes and guidelines relevant to clinical and research ethics, and in particular the National Statement of the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Privacy Act, the Human tissue Act and the therapeutic Goods Act as it relates to use of medications in clinical trials and how these may need to be adapted to comply with NSHLHD policies and procedure.
