Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The position works across three sites, the Access Team, the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC), and the Triage and Assessment Centre (TAC). The position is intended to ensure coverage across teams during business hours. Successful applicants also participate in a District-wide after-hours roster.

This position contributes to the provision timely, authoritative, and need-adapted care to people presenting with acute mental health needs to community, brief inpatient and emergency settings and works collaboratively with experienced interdisciplinary teams. The Mental Health Service aims “To be a proactive and responsive person-centred service which provides integrated care to each consumer, in the context of their family, support people and community; primarily, working together with our communities to improve mental health, promote recovery and prevent mental illness.”

The Mountains and the Plains of the LHD include metropolitan, rural, and semi-rural communities, many of which are situated within World Heritage natural environments with access to excellent amenities and transport.

Selection Criteria

1.       Possess or be eligible for: registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZP) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Services Act 1997, Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) determination 2014; current NSW driver’s licence. Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development and reflective practice.

2.       Demonstrated expertise and experience in providing effective, high quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting; demonstrated commitment to person-centred, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.

3.       Demonstrated ability to support and work in collaboratively interprofessional contexts that include lived-experience professionals; sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual domains. Expertise and experience relevant to the position.

4.       Demonstrated high level verbal and written communication ability including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively, and respectfully. Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation.

5.       Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching and supervision of medical staff, non-medical colleagues, and students consistent with contemporary best practice; commitment to interprofessional learning.

6.        Qualities, attitudes, and articulated values consistent with a senior medical practitioner providing mental health care to consumers across the age span and their social networks; and evidence of high ethical and professional standards.

7.       Experience in or capacity for supporting quality improvement and clinical governance activities; and demonstrated commitment to high quality care provision in the public sector.

8.       Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical, and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service and its staff and the ability to draw on values and research concepts in the appraisal of evidence, guidelines and quality improvement activities.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997, and the Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.
