The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our Community Counselling service team in a Part Time Temporary position, with the potential for future permanent opportunities moving forward. NBMLHD is seeking a Child and Family Counsellor to join our Community Counselling Service at St Marys Community Health Centre (there may be requirement to attend other Community Health Centres at times), providing general counselling within Primary Care and Community Health. 

 

The Community Counselling Service works within the First 2000 Days and Domestic and Family Violence Frameworks recognising the importance of early intervention. The Child and Family Counsellor is responsible for the provision of counselling to individuals, families and children requiring a short to medium term intervention. The position provides a valuable opportunity for a clinician to broaden their experience by working with a diverse range of clients and applying evidence-based counselling models. The successful candidate will be part of a supportive service that provides professional development opportunities, clinical supervision, peer support and cultural supervision to develop skills and support continued wellbeing.

What you will bring to the role

  1. Qualification: Social Work: Degree in Social Work from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, or Psychology: Registered with the Psychology Board of Australia, or Counselling: Minimum AQF level 7 qualification recognised or accredited by the Peak Body (PACFA) with eligibility for membership as a counsellor with PACFA.
  2. Demonstrated experience in psychosocial assessment and application of evidence based therapeutic interventions to support clients presenting with a wide array of complex concerns.
  3. An understanding of the dynamics of Domestic and Family Violence and also the significance of the first 5 years of a child’s life regarding ongoing health and wellbeing.
  4. Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of Child Protection responding and reporting responsibilities.
  5. Demonstrated skills in multidisciplinary care coordination and building effective partnerships with internal health services and external government or community managed organisations.
  6. Excellent written and oral communication skills, initiative, time management and demonstrated ability to utilise information technology systems.
  7. Awareness of and /or experience working with people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, those who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD).
  8. Current Driver’s Licence (including P1 or above) and willingness to use for work purpose travel. This may include driving long distances across the LHD.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified and must not exceed the duration or conditions associated with the current visa.
