This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. About Us
Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is a wonderful place to expand your career and grow your skills and knowledge. As a recognised leader in the healthcare industry, we provide a range of public health services to the Nepean, Blue Mountains, and Lithgow Region.
The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).
An opportunity is now available for an Aboriginal Health Worker to join the team at Cranebrook Community Health Centre on a permanent full time basis.
The Aboriginal Family Health Worker is a key position in establishing trust and building relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and community with the BSF and AMIHS programs.
The Aboriginal Family Health Worker in BSF and AMIHS Works in partnership with the AMIHS midwife to provide community based midwifery care in pregnancy and the early postnatal period.
Your role as Aboriginal Health Worker works in partnership with Child and Family Health Nurses to promote health and wellbeing, supporting parenting, identifying health, development and wellbeing concerns. You will focus on increasing the awareness of Aboriginal women and Aboriginal communities about pregnancy related and child development issues through community development activities. You will facilitate linkages between community health, the local Aboriginal community, local Aboriginal Controlled organisations, government and non-government organisation to ensure an integrated and comprehensive approach to the provision of care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.

What you will bring to the role
- Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and female (applicant's race and gender is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 and Section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
- Has undertaken or is willing to undertake a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care.
- Demonstrated ability to provide cultural brokerage with individuals, families who have young children and communities; cultural guidance for the other members of the team; and, facilitate respectful and culturally safe access for individuals, families and communities.
- Demonstrated understanding of the health and psychosocial issues impacting Aboriginal infants, children and their families.
- Demonstrated understanding of the relevant policy and procedures within the Local Health District and NSW Health that guide the AMIHS/BSF programs.
- Demonstrated experience working with and ability to provide social support for families who have young children in collaboration with multidisciplinary AMIHS/BSF team
- Demonstrated written, oral communication and computer skills and demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team.
- Current driver's licence and willingness to use for work purposes. This may include driving long distances across the LHD.
