What you'll be doing
The Visiting Medical Officer General Practitioner working under supervision in Addiction Medicine will provide medical services across a range of substance use disorders including assessment, pharmacotherapy, withdrawal management, hospital consultation liaison, Substance Use in Pregnancy and Parenting Services, relapse prevention, referral and consultation with key treatment providers (including GP’s). The Visiting Medical Officer will work under the supervision of Addiction Medicine Specialists in multi-disciplinary teams to provide care using a range of technologies including telephone and videoconferencing.

Provide contemporary comprehensive specialist services for optimal patient outcomes.
Provide and support training to clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality education and safe clinical practice.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases

If you are applying for a Category A position, under the NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030, evidence of current immunity status that complies with the policy must be supplied. 

COVID-19 Vaccination Compliancy

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course (2 doses) of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine (except for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine which is approved by the TGA as a single dose primary course). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health or provide an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. A NSW Health agency may require further information about the medical contraindication (including but not limited to an Immunisation Medical Exemption form – IM011 form)​

 ​​Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. 

Salary will be accordance with NSW Health State Awards for the advertised classification/s.  These awards are available at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/pages/default.aspx.

Selection Criteria: 

  1. Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Specialist qualifications relevant to this position, including Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM), Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) 
  3. Enrolled in AChAM Training in Addiction Medicine
  4. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and clinical experience in the management of patients with substance use disorders including withdrawal management, opioid treatment, hospital AOD consultation liaison, substance use in pregnancy and parenting, and outpatient addiction medicine.
  5. Experience in prescribing methadone/suboxone/buprenorphine and accredited authorised prescriber in NSW, or willingness to undertake same.
  6. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  7.  Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research, and quality improvement with availability to participate in an on-call roster.
  8. Current NSW Driver’s License and willingness to travel.
