What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Director of Surgery, the VMO in General Surgery will participate in the consultant on call roster, assist in the education role of the department, provide clinical care to patients as well as perform all types of general surgery for the Coffs Clinical Network.

This is a Category A position. Recommended applicants will be reviewed for compliance with NSW Health policy directive for Category A positions prior to offer.

Salary will be accordance with NSW Health State Awards for the advertised classification/s.  These awards are available at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/pages/default.aspx.


Selection Criteria 

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Surgeon and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated significant experience relevant to General Surgery and evidence of competence in skills relevant to a regional centre hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios and current Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy certification or recertification with The Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA). 
  3. A minimum of one year Consultant experience working in a regional centre with special interest and experience in colorectal surgery, upper GI or trauma desirable. 
  4. Participation in an equitable hospital on-call roster for General Surgery.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to General Surgery including teaching of medical students, JMOs, Nursing Staff, and other staff as required and an ongoing commitment to surgical research.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement, accreditation requirements and peer review.
  7. Excellent communication and liaison skills, fostering positive and productive working relationships between team members and with other disciplines.
  8. Current NSW Drivers Licence and willingness to travel throughout the LHD as required
