About Your Role

The Nurse Practitioner/Transitional Nurse Practitioner (NP/TNP) Oncology works in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Oncology Team providing clinical expertise to patients and staff working within the MLHD-RCCC
Oncology.

The NP/TNP Oncology works within a defined scope of practice operating at an advanced practice level and independently manages a range of patient conditions.

The NP/TNP Oncology provides comprehensive systematic patient assessment, determines the appropriate interventions necessary to deliver advanced and holistic management of patients for treatment or symptom review and refers issues that are outside of the NP scope to the Oncology Registrar or Oncology Staff Specialist.

The NP/TNP extends nursing practice by facilitating timely patient review and management of patients in the Oncology inpatient and outpatient setting.

The NP/TNP is an expert clinician who provides evidence-based autonomous clinical care for patients in accordance with current best evidence and relevant NSW Health and MLHD Policies Procedure and Guidelines.

The scope of practice complies with NSW Health Policy Directive Nurse/Midwife Practitioners NSW PD2012_026 and the Nursery and Midwifery Board of Australia's standards for Practice.

The NP/TNP Oncology role includes:

  • Advanced comprehensive assessment
  • Investigative and diagnostic interventions
  • Consultation with community MLHD, RCCC, Griffith Base Hospital medical teams
  • Referral to community health care workers and in patient medical teams
  • Prescribing of Medicines


The primary objectives of the NP/TNP are to optimise the management and coordination of oncology patients both in the outpatient oncology service and inpatient ward setting at Griffith Base hospital or Griffith community environment and actively participate in the MLHD Nurse Practitioner Governance committee and collaborate in promoting the Nurse Practitioner pathway across Local and State opportunities.
