About this role
Kick-start your career in biostatistics by joining the highly regarded NSW Biostatistics Training Program! This unique, three-year, workplace-based program provides hands-on experience in biostatistics and the opportunity to make a real impact in public health. As a Trainee Biostatistician, you'll gain specialist skills, learn from experts in the field and earn a Master of Biostatistics degree from the University of Sydney.

Remuneration: Crown Clerk Grade 7/8, starting salary from $110,266 – $122,058 p.a. (plus superannuation and annual leave loading)

What you'll be doing 
Trainees gain experience in biostatistics through supervised work placements in a range of locations within the NSW health system and complete a Master of Biostatistics degree part-time through the University of Sydney. The master's degree is fully funded by NSW Health. Current Master of Biostatistics students are encouraged to apply.

About you 
We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health who: 

• meet the entry requirements for a Master of Biostatistics at the University of Sydney. This requires holding a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, science, psychology, medicine, pharmacy, economics, health sciences or other appropriate qualification with a minimum credit average mark of 65% or equivalent.
• have an aptitude for advanced mathematical work, demonstrated through work experience and/or study
• have high-level knowledge of statistical concepts and methods
• have extensive experience in the use of statistical software packages
• have the right to work in Australia for the duration of the traineeship. You must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport, or a citizen of another country with an appropriate visa that allows you to work in Australia.

In addition, due to the competitive nature of these traineeships, relevant work experience in a health- or data-related field is highly desirable.

Targeted Questions (response to be no more than 2 pages in total)

1. Describe your experience of using statistical software packages to manipulate and analyse data sets, including any experience you have of working with health data.
2. Provide an example of a project that you have been involved in where you were required to perform a significant amount of data analysis. This could be a project with a large data set, or one where the analysis was complex. Include the project background, your role in the project, how you went about refining the research questions and determining the most appropriate statistical methods. Outline the conclusions from the data analysis in layperson’s terms.
3. Provide an example of a data-driven recommendation you have made, that you anticipated would be met with resistance from stakeholders. How did you approach communicating your findings, and what was the outcome?
