What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families at Cumberland Hospital. This non-clinical role ensures culturally respectful care and advocacy through:

  • Providing culturally safe support in mental health inpatient settings.
  • Advocating for holistic, person-centred care during hospitalisation and discharge.
  • Facilitating access to internal and external services for continuity of care.
  • Supporting education programs to enhance cultural safety within the service.
  • Contributing to broader reconciliation and Aboriginal Health Strategy goals.

Selection Criteria

  1. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Antidiscrimination Act NSW 1977).
  2. Have or be willing to obtain relevant qualifications in Certificate III or IV community services or primary health care.
  3. Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal people who experience mental health conditions and psychosocial distress. This includes intergenerational trauma, various family structured and the impacts of social and emotional wellbeing impacts for Aboriginal communities.
  4. Experience in working effectively with a large range of health professionals and advocating for Aboriginal mental health consumer their families and communities.
  5. Strong advocacy and case management skills with a broad knowledge of services that are available to support Aboriginal consumer and their families in addressing their health care needs.
  6. Competence in the use of databases, electronic documentation, and computer based administrative systems.
  7. Demonstrated experience working with complex issues, problem solving, that impact Aboriginal consumers when in a mental health hospital setting. Understanding of the management of consumer complaints and consumer privacy and escalation processes.
  8. License: Class C Driver’s License
