Nepean Hospital is the Level 6 maternity service for surrounding hospitals including Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Bathurst, Orange, and Dubbo Hospitals. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Service is dedicated to the management of complex pregnancies, offering detailed fetal imaging, advanced prenatal diagnostics, and evidence-based care for women and families facing high-risk conditions. The service works collaboratively with obstetricians, neonatologists, genetic counsellors, sonographers, midwives, and allied health professionals to deliver coordinated care.
The Maternal Fetal Medicine team are seeking a Provisional Fellow to join our team. The role provides an ideal training opportunity, with access to ultrasound training, fetal echocardiography, prenatal genetics, obstetric/fetal procedures, high risk antenatal care, obstetric medicine, and research opportunities. The position is ideal for someone training towards CMFM and/or DDU/ COGU qualifications but is also suitable for someone seeking to gain experience in Maternal Fetal Medicine or ultrasound.
- Ward rounds for Maternal Fetal Medicine patients.
- Build ultrasound scanning skills under the supervision of a specialist or sonographer, to the level of being about to assess fetal anatomy, growth and wellbeing. There is a fortnightly fetal echocardiography scanning list, with opportunities to attend.
- Counsel women and families about fetal anomalies, and build skills in fetal procedures under the supervision of a specialist.
- Manage patients in high-risk obstetric clinics, including the Twins clinic, MFM clinic, VIP (obstetric medicine), and Perinatal Loss clinic.
- Coordinate care for women and families requiring complex multidisciplinary care or travelling from other districts within our tiered perinatal network. There is a monthly MFM Outreach ultrasound/counselling clinic at Orange Base Hospital, with opportunities to attend. There is an opportunity to participate in prenatal genetic counselling under the supervision of a geneticist and/or genetic counsellor. There is an opportunity to join the neonatal ICU ward round and teaching activities.
- Participating in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day, evening or night shifts across a seven day roster.
Where you'll be working
- MFM Fellows will be mainly based on in the Maternal Fetal Medicine unit, based on Perinatal Ultrasound Department, Nepean Hospital.
- Occasionally, Fellows will be required to attend regional MFM clinic or Telehealth clinic.
- Trainees will be working in following area;
- Perinatal Ultrasound department
- Antenatal Clinic
- Birth Unit
- Antenatal and Postnatal Ward
- Regional MFM clinic. Obstetric experience is predominantly at Nepean Hospital with Gynaecological Surgery offered at all sites.
Essential requirements
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Current registration as a Trainee (or eligible for registration) with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and intent to obtain Fellowship of the College. Completion of Integrated Training Programme (ITP) training and demonstration of interest in maternal fetal medicine or ultrasound training preferred.
- Recent relevant clinical experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role and completion of a minimum of three postgraduate years experience.
- Demonstrated interest in Maternal Fetal Medicine or ultrasound.
- This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
- Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
- To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection criteria
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Advanced ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Experience with high-risk complex obstetric patient care.
