The Provisional Fellow position in Complex Adolescent Care and Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) Medicine is available at The Children's Hospital at Westmead for the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028.


The Provisional Fellowship is designed for an Advanced Trainee in Paediatrics or Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine who is looking for experience in longitudinal care of adolescents with chronic illness, diagnosis, assessment management of the needs of TDG youth and managing psychosocial complexity. Trainees will gain clinical, leadership and research experience in this area. The position may be accredited towards advanced training in general paediatrics (developmental and psychosocial) or Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Training (AYAM 6 months of core A and 6 months of core B) with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. This is a 1.0FTE position available at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW), within The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN). There is an active commitment to teaching, research and publication. The Trainee is supported to attend educational sessions within the network for both adolescent and TGD medicine. Job sharing arrangements for the positions may be considered. At times trainees may be requested to provide clinical support across SCHN. 
  
The Fellow will gain experience in Adolescent Medicine,inpatient, consultation liaison and outpatient services for children and adolescents. The successful applicant will also contribute to the general clinical services of the department, and on call as negotiated. The Fellow also collaborates with other Adolescent Medicine Service, Subspecialty Medical Services, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry services, Child Protection services and Adolescent and TGD Community Services.  

The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the clinical team, work with a multidisciplinary team and contribute to teaching and training within the department. Opportunities to develop leadership and management skills are also available, including assisting with teaching of junior trainees, nursing staff and allied health professionals in issues pertaining to complex adolescent health care and transgender adolescent health care. There will also be an opportunity to develop a research project with the aim of publication towards the end of the clinical placement. Supervision will be arranged with the Academic Department of Adolescent Medicine and University Teaching School.

Selection Criteria 

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Registered with RACP as an Advanced Trainee. This may include General Paediatrics or dual training in Adolescent & Young Adult Medicine. It is preferable to be in the final years of advanced training.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to work with vulnerable youth and their families.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals, children, adolescents and families, and skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Demonstrated interest in Adolescent Medicine.
  6. Demonstrated adaptability to the differing needs of children, adolescents, young adults and their families.
  7. Demonstrated skills in teaching and a willingness to provide education and supervision to junior staff and students.
  8. Demonstrated understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research.
