About the Service, Team and Location
Step into a truly unique role within the Hunter Brain Injury Service (HBIS) – one of only 15 state-wide, specialist rehabilitation services in NSW providing care for adults (both compensable and non-compensable) following a traumatic brain injury.
Based in Bar Beach, Newcastle, our standalone facility offers the perfect setting for recovery and innovation – with on-site parking, spacious counselling and therapy rooms, tranquil gardens, a courtyard, and a culturally significant yarning circle. From here, we provide outpatient, outreach, and community-based care across a broad footprint including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Lower and Upper Hunter, Port Stephens, Greater Taree, and the Central Coast.
We also operate a five-bed Transitional Living Unit (TLU), which provides essential residential rehabilitation and life skills support to clients from across NSW – including rural areas like Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Forbes – when they have family or key supports within our catchment. As there are only seven TLUs in the state, our role in supporting community reintegration is critical.
Our team is a highly skilled and values-driven group of professionals, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, Neuropsychologists, Dietitians, Clinical Psychologists, Rehab Assistants, Administrative and Housekeeping staff, as well as a visiting Rehab Physician and Neuropsychiatrist. We are known for our strong teamwork, deep commitment to client outcomes, and supportive, inclusive culture – not to mention our active social club!

About the Role
As a Speech Pathologist at HBIS, you’ll work as part of a specialised, award-winning Allied Health team delivering individualised interventions and case management for clients recovering from traumatic brain injury.
- This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” position – no two days are the same. You’ll:
- Deliver both impairment-based and functional speech therapy interventions.
- Design and implement therapy programs tailored to each client’s goals.
- Complete assessments, testing, and intervention across clinic, community, residential (TLU), telehealth, and outreach models.
- Collaborate with external providers to support community reintegration, education, return to work, or housing needs.
- Contribute to group education and support sessions.
- Coordinate complex case management activities in line with the BIRP model of care.
You’ll also have the opportunity to build your skills in case coordination, extend your knowledge of compensable and non-compensable systems, and strengthen your professional networks through state-wide discipline-specific events.
What We’re Looking For
We're seeking a passionate clinician who is committed to improving lives after brain injury. Someone who:
- Brings experience or interest in working with clients following traumatic brain injury.
- Uses a combination of impairment-based and functional retraining techniques.
- Is holistic, innovative, and empowering in their approach.
- Recognises the role of social, cultural, psychological, and systemic factors in rehabilitation.
- Is confident, values-driven, and able to remain calm, flexible, and adaptable in complex or challenging situations.
- Works well both independently and collaboratively and is eager to contribute to a positive team culture.
- Has strong time management, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Is committed to ongoing professional development, continuous learning, and service improvement.
Support, Orientation and Professional Development
At HBIS, your success is our priority.
- You’ll be welcomed and supported by our Service Manager, Clinical Coordinator, and two experienced Speech Pathologists.
- Orientation will include time spent with each discipline, as well as shadowing and working alongside your SP colleagues.
- You’ll have access to statewide networks, peer support, and regular connections with other Brain Injury Speech Pathologists across NSW.
- Ongoing support is provided through regular performance reviews, rounding, informal catchups, and access to clinical and cultural supervision.
- You'll be encouraged to participate in statewide training, continuing education, and discipline-specific networking events to keep your skills sharp and your passion strong.
