Where you’ll be working

The Newcastle Sexual Assault Service, based at John Hunter Hospital on Awabakal Country, is a specialist team dedicated to providing high-quality, trauma-informed care. You'll work alongside passionate and experienced counselling and forensic medical professionals committed to supporting victim-survivors of sexual assault. This is a dynamic, collaborative unit that values inclusion, diversity, and professional respect. The successful candidate will work primarily from the dedicated forensic/medical suite and engage with patients presenting during both business hours and follow-up periods.
 



About the role

In this vital role, you will conduct forensic and medical assessments during daytime hours and provide follow-up care to ensure patients understand medical advice and are linked into appropriate after-care services. You’ll contribute to case review meetings, support documentation and database management, maintain clinical spaces, and assist in the development of care plans. This position may also include preparing expert medical certificates and providing court evidence when required. You will be key to maintaining high standards in a sensitive and rewarding area of practice.
 



About you

  • You’re a motivated, organised clinician who thrives in a busy, multidisciplinary environment.
  • You bring a trauma-informed approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.
  • You are experienced in nursing areas such as midwifery, women’s health, sexual health, or related fields.
  • You hold SANE certification or are actively working towards this qualification.
  • You can balance clinical, governance, and administrative responsibilities effectively.
  • You value teamwork, open communication, and professional development.

     


Requirements

  • Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse or Midwife
  • SANE certification or progression towards completion
  • Experience in sexual health, midwifery, family planning, venereology, or women’s health
  • Ability to manage clinical priorities in a trauma-informed, patient-centred environment
  • Willingness to provide expert opinion and court evidence when required
