The John Hunter Hospital is the principal referral centre for Newcastle and Northern New South Wales and is one of Australia's leading regional tertiary hospitals.

 

As a 796-bed tertiary referral centre and the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle, John Hunter Hospital provides exposure to an exceptionally broad range of surgical presentations and procedures. The hospital is home to the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in New South Wales outside metropolitan Sydney and is the only regional hospital in Australia to offer all surgical subspecialties on a single campus.

 

John Hunter Hospital offers SRMOs and Unaccredited Trainees the opportunity to develop a strong foundation for a surgical career through extensive operative exposure, consultant-led teaching, and structured education programs. Trainees benefit from dedicated support aimed at preparing them for successful application to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' Surgical Education and Training (SET) program.

 

The Surgical Skills Network provides:

Trainees joining the Network in 2027 will also have the opportunity to work within the newly commissioned $835 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct. This major redevelopment includes a new seven-storey Acute Services Building, expanded critical care services, 22 operating theatres, nine interventional suites, integrated education spaces, and enhanced links with research and innovation partners. The redevelopment represents one of the largest healthcare infrastructure investments in regional Australia and will support the delivery of world-class surgical care, training and research for decades to come.

Whether your goal is to build a competitive SET application or gain broad surgical experience within a high-volume tertiary centre, John Hunter Hospital offers a unique training environment within one of Australia's most diverse and progressive surgical networks.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Two years post graduate medical experience at commencement of post with recent demonstrated surgical experience (minimum of three surgical terms). For current PGY3 or above please apply for our unaccredited trainee position
  3. Completion or at minimum registration of Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  5. Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team
  6. Evidence of continued professional development showing a commitment to a career in surgery
